— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Rixensart, in the Walloon Brabant province, this residential architecture project by STARC involves the construction of a four-facade detached house set within a dense suburban fabric, on a plot distinguished by a generous garden enclosed by mature trees.
The siting of the house takes full advantage of this green setting, orienting the living spaces toward the garden while maintaining sufficient setback from neighbouring properties to ensure privacy. The massing is compact and restrained, in measured dialogue with the scale of the surrounding houses, which are predominantly composed of simple volumes with pitched roofs. The choice of materials pursues continuity with the local built environment without resorting to mimicry, seeking chromatic and textural coherence with the immediate surroundings.
The relationship between interior space and garden is the guiding principle of the design. The ground-floor living areas open generously onto the garden, while the three bedrooms on the upper floor enjoy unobstructed views over the surrounding tree canopy. The fenestration is carefully calibrated to capture natural light according to orientation, with openings kept minimal on the street side. The landscaping preserves the existing trees and limits impermeable surfaces to what is strictly necessary, reflecting a design approach that is attentive to the landscape and to local biodiversity.
