— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Grand-Leez, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), STARC designed the replacement of an existing veranda with a contemporary extension of approximately 45 m², built at the rear of a single-family home and raised one level above the original footprint.

The massing of the main building remains unchanged, while the new volume is defined by a flat roof that creates a seamless visual connection between the two parts of the house. The materiality is central to the architectural statement: anthracite composite panels clad the envelope of the extension, set against a light grey render on the recessed front facade. This interplay of materials gives the addition a distinctly contemporary character, clearly readable as a separate architectural gesture from the existing building.

The intervention also reorganises the interior layout in a meaningful way. The new extension houses a more spacious dining room and family kitchen, freeing up the former kitchen to become a utility room. A wider opening between the living area and the extension strengthens spatial continuity and ensures generous natural light throughout the living spaces. A terrace on the garden side extends the interior outward, offering a panoramic view of the garden.

Beyond its additional floor area, this residential architecture project improves the overall liveability of the home, refines the functional arrangement of rooms, and enhances the energy performance of the dwelling.
