— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
This residential renovation and extension project in Wavre, in the Walloon Brabant province, follows a strategy of formal and material continuity with the existing building fabric. The house, a two-storey detached dwelling set back from the street in a typical suburban neighbourhood, features a compact main volume in red brick beneath a pitched roof clad in grey slate, a character that informed every aspect of the architectural response. STARC, an architecture firm based in Gembloux, Belgium, led the design across all three project components.
The intervention addresses three complementary objectives. The extension of the living room towards the garden strengthens the visual and spatial relationship between the main living area and the outdoor environment, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. The conversion of the attic, made accessible by a new staircase, unlocks a previously underused volume without altering the apparent roofline. A covered outdoor amenity space of approximately 20 square metres on the garden facade creates a habitable threshold that extends the living spaces naturally towards the lawn.
Throughout, the project maintains a deliberate material coherence, in dialogue with the existing brickwork and the green character of the garden. Its architectural strength lies in this formal restraint, prioritising a well-calibrated articulation of uses over the assertion of a distinct new architectural language.
