— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

The roof renovation of this castle farm in Grand-Manil, in the Gembloux area of Namur province, aims to preserve the formal integrity and volumetric coherence of a heritage ensemble deeply rooted in the open agricultural landscape of Wallonia. Entrusted to the architecture firm STARC, the project follows a careful conservation approach, prioritising the reading of the building as a whole over isolated interventions.

The composition of the complex, featuring an elongated main range under a double-pitched roof articulated with a perpendicular wing forming an L-shaped return, defines a characteristic silhouette that the project is designed to maintain intact. The roof renewal scrupulously respects the existing pitches, proportions and rhythms of the roof covering, restoring the material and tonal unity that is inherent to this type of traditional rural building in Wallonia.

Every intervention is conceived to recede behind the overall logic of the ensemble: no addition competes with the hierarchy between volumes or disrupts the dialogue the building holds with its generous wooded parkland setting. By renewing the roof covering without altering its geometry, the project contributes to the lasting preservation of a rural heritage whose value lies precisely in its formal integrity and its relationship with the wide open landscape surrounding Grand-Manil.
