— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
A single-storey extension to a characterful 1970s house in Céroux-Mousty, in Walloon Brabant, designed to create an open kitchen-living space and a utility room seamlessly connected to the existing building. The project, carried out by STARC architecture firm, takes the original structure as its reference: an ochre brick masonry volume topped by a steeply pitched gabled roof whose streetside silhouette is carefully preserved.
A compact, low-profile volume is added to the garden façade, at a point where the house already suggested a natural horizontal extension. This restrained approach maintains the legibility of the main building while opening the interior towards the generous rear garden. The carefully composed glazing of the new kitchen maximises natural light and establishes a direct relationship between indoor living and outdoor space.
In terms of materiality, the extension enters into dialogue with the existing fabric: brick cladding echoes the original building, while a flat or low-pitched roof subtly distinguishes the new addition from the old without creating a formal rupture. This hierarchy of volumes ensures a respectful urban integration that honours the character of the existing house within the residential context of Walloon Brabant.
