— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Sombreffe, in the province of Namur, Wallonia, architecture firm STARC designed a single-storey extension to make an existing detached house fully accessible and adaptable for people with reduced mobility. The new volume is implanted in the cleared interval between the main house and the boundary fence, adopting a compact and assertive massing beneath a mono-pitched roof that responds to the surrounding suburban roofscape.

The choice of materials ensures continuity with the existing building: orange-toned brickwork echoes the original facade, while a generous corner window in dark-framed joinery introduces a restrained contemporary language. This corner opening draws natural light from the garden and creates a direct visual connection with the outdoor space, elegantly offsetting the constraints of a tight site.

The programme, comprising a bedroom, a shower room and a small sitting room, is laid out on a single level and connected seamlessly to the existing home. The absence of thresholds, the fluid circulation and the step-free connection to the main dwelling ensure long-term independence for the occupants. This residential architecture project in Wallonia demonstrates that accessibility requirements and architectural quality are fully compatible within an established neighbourhood.
