— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

The redevelopment of an industrial recycling and inert waste treatment site in Farciennes, in the province of Hainaut in Wallonia, gave rise to a coherent architectural requalification encompassing several buildings with complementary programmes. The architecture firm STARC structured the entire site around a clear programmatic hierarchy, making the functional organisation of this densely occupied plot legible from the public road.

The gatehouse, positioned at the head of the site in immediate proximity to the weighbridge, acts as the project's first architectural landmark. It marks the entrance with restraint while ensuring visual surveillance of the entire plot and managing incoming and outgoing flows. The workshop building of approximately 300 m² and the storage canopy of approximately 800 m² are designed as compact volumes with a measured scale. The low-pitched roof and metal cladding align with the constructive logic of the industrial sector, integrating seamlessly into the existing built environment without artificial contrast. The canopy, open on its sides, provides effective protection for materials while maintaining visual and functional permeability across the site.

The two-storey office block, incorporating staff amenity spaces across approximately 150 m², represents the most refined component of the project. Its distinct volumetry, organised fenestration and considered orientation provide occupants with controlled natural daylighting and quality working conditions. The articulation between this volume and the production areas establishes a clear and lasting hierarchy between administrative spaces and operational zones, giving the site as a whole a coherent, functional and durable spatial order.
