— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Gottechain, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, architecture firm STARC designed a detached timber-frame house combining a private residence with a professional yoga studio, set on a generous plot of over 27 ares reached by a private driveway.
The site strategy makes the most of the plot's configuration by orienting the main volume to the south-east, maximising solar gain and supporting the integration of photovoltaic panels. Peripheral vegetation ensures privacy from neighbouring properties, while the private access road effectively screens traffic noise, a quality of particular relevance for a yoga practice. An existing pond reinforces the calm and contemplative atmosphere of the setting.
Both functions, residential and professional, are brought together within a single compact volume under a pitched roof, with an interior area of approximately 275 m². The distinction between the two uses is expressed through materiality: timber cladding defines the private living areas, while a grey render marks the professional space. Roof overhangs on the side elevations control solar radiation, and a raised terrace extends the yoga studio towards the garden. Generous glazed openings on the garden elevation flood the living spaces with natural light and frame views over the garden and pond.
This residential architecture project in Wallonia demonstrates how a dual programme can become the generative principle of a coherent, contemporary architectural identity.
