— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Namur, architecture firm STARC designs a four-facade detached house carefully sited within a wooded, secluded plot, in considered dialogue with an existing canopy of mature trees that defines the character of the land. Located in Namur province, Wallonia, the project sets out to embed the built volume within the arboreal layer rather than oppose it, preserving remarkable specimens and keeping the building footprint deliberately restrained.
The volumetric approach favours compactness and measure, so that vegetation retains visual dominance when the site is read from the street. Inside, living spaces, bedrooms, a study and a workshop are organised according to a clear orientation logic that captures natural light in relation to each room's use. Glazing is positioned to frame views into the surrounding woodland while maintaining the privacy and seclusion that give the site its distinctive atmosphere.
The material palette is deliberately sober, drawing on brick and metal in reference to the forged gate and brick pillars that mark the entrance to the plot. This new residential construction in Belgium demonstrates that architectural discretion can be a quality in its own right, when the aim is to strengthen an existing landscape rather than to impose upon it. The result is a family home that belongs to its setting as much as it inhabits it.
