— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

This new-build project in Incourt, in Walloon Brabant, brings together a professional space for a liberal practice on the ground floor and a two-bedroom dwelling on the upper level, set on a plot at the edge of the village fabric and in direct dialogue with the open agricultural landscape of the Brabant plateau.

The site, with a street frontage of approximately twenty metres, called for a carefully considered layout that balances the relationship between the public streetscape and the wide open horizon at the rear of the plot. The chosen volume, two storeys under a pitched roof, aligns with the scale of the surrounding built fabric while asserting a compact and legible massing that avoids any rupture with the village context. The facade reads as two distinct registers, directly expressing the dual nature of the programme: the ground floor opens generously towards the street, signalling the public function, while the residential upper floor turns towards the garden and the agricultural landscape, preserving the privacy of the home.

STARC, the architecture firm behind this project, pursued a sober and durable materiality rooted in the tonal palette of the region's traditional architecture. The compactness of the volume reduces the building footprint and frees a generous portion of the plot, enabling a clear transition between the professional space accessible from the street and the private garden serving the dwelling. The pitched roof reinforces the landscape integration and enters into quiet conversation with the surrounding village architecture.
