— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

A new single-family house in Gembloux, Namur province, designed by architecture firm STARC at the boundary between a village fabric and open agricultural land, where measured implantation is essential to both reinforce the built streetfront and create a gentle transition toward the cultivated landscape extending to the rear. The project engages directly with its semi-rural context, responding to the scale and materiality of the surrounding converted farm volumes and pitched dark-tile roofscapes.

The building envelope, two storeys over a base level with habitable loft space, aligns with the rhythm of neighbouring volumes without replicating them. The massing is organised around a compact main body, extended laterally by an integrated garage and carport, keeping parking functions subordinate to the street elevation. This comb-like arrangement establishes a clear hierarchy between the more public forecourt and the private garden space oriented toward open countryside views.

Materiality follows the local vernacular, with a dual-pitch roof, restrained tones and a carefully composed front facade, while the rear elevation opens more freely to harvest natural light and sustain a strong visual dialogue with the agricultural landscape. The overall compactness of the approximately 230 m² programme, spread across two levels and a habitable attic, ensures volumetric consistency and a respectful integration into the semi-rural character of Gembloux, in Wallonia.
