— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

A four-facade detached house in Gembloux, Belgium, designed in response to a distinctly triangular plot situated along a rural road at the boundary between village fabric and open agricultural landscape.

The unusual geometry of the site drives the entire architectural approach: rather than working against it, the design positions the house at the apex of the triangle, set back from the street. This generates a measured presence from the public realm while creating the depth of garden needed for genuine outdoor privacy. The two-storey compact massing is carefully articulated to capture favourable orientations and to engage with the modest scale of the surrounding built context. The carport is treated as a clearly distinct ancillary volume, marking the threshold between road and dwelling without burdening the overall composition.

An indoor swimming pool, integrated in direct continuity with the living level, extends the leisure spaces toward the open garden afforded by the plot's depth, reinforcing a fluid relationship between interior and exterior. The architecture firm STARC guided the project toward a restrained materiality and a disciplined facade rhythm in keeping with the semi-rural character of Gembloux, in Namur province, Wallonia. Fenestration is oriented to draw natural light deep into the living spaces while maintaining a degree of discretion from the streetside. Landscape integration relies on visual continuity with the adjacent agricultural land, with existing vegetation providing a natural transition between the built plot and the wider countryside.
