— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
This residential renovation project in Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, in the province of Namur, Wallonia, addresses a clear architectural challenge: restoring spatial coherence and livability to a house whose original qualities had been progressively undermined by a series of poorly coordinated additions. The architecture firm STARC developed a strategy centred on simplification, compactness, and a stronger relationship between interior spaces and the garden.
The garage fronting the facade is demolished to free up ground-level space and allow a legible recomposition of the whole. The existing annexes are restructured and unified to accommodate a bedroom and an open-plan living and kitchen area. The connection between the main building volume and these reorganised annexes is entirely rethought to achieve fluid interior continuity and a more direct dialogue with the outdoor spaces.
The material approach follows the logic of the existing built fabric: render finishes and colour tones are unified across the ensemble to erase the visual fragmentation left by previous alterations. The rhythm of openings is revised to increase natural light in the living areas and enhance the permeability between inside and outside. The project ultimately restores a clear volumetric identity and a genuine quality of living to a home whose potential had long been constrained.
