— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Jodoigne, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, this project delivers a newly built four-sided detached house that settles quietly into a rural transition landscape where recent residential construction meets traditional agricultural buildings.
The compact volume, approximately 14 by 8.5 metres in footprint, is carefully sited to maintain open views across the surrounding bocage landscape, defined by an isolated pollard willow and a drainage ditch along the plot boundary. The building's orientation and massing respect the scale of neighbouring structures while preserving sightlines to and from the wider countryside. Glazing is distributed across the facades according to solar orientation, balancing generous natural light with residential privacy.
A double-height living space forms the social core of the house, creating a sense of vertical generosity and reinforcing the visual connection between interior and exterior. The garage is integrated within the main volume, keeping the overall footprint compact and the site largely unencumbered. The channelling of the boundary ditch, incorporated into the design from the outset, reflects a considered approach to water management in an agricultural context.
STARC, the architecture firm based in Gembloux, grounds this new house in its Wallonian setting through a restrained material palette that resonates with local building traditions, affirming an architectural approach rooted in landscape sensitivity and contextual integration.
