— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Ciney, in the province of Namur, Wallonia, STARC designed a new single-family home of approximately 150 square metres on a corner plot, replacing a dilapidated garage built in limestone rubble and red brick.

The architectural approach draws on continuity with the village's existing scale: a dual-pitched roof echoes the formal logic of the surrounding built fabric, while the architectural language remains restrained and distinctly contemporary. The corner positioning is fully exploited to orientate each facade according to its own aspect, with carefully calibrated fenestration that balances generous natural light with a controlled relationship to the public realm. The materiality engages in dialogue with local limestone and brick without imitation or pastiche, giving the new house a clear identity while rooting it firmly in its context.

The carport is integrated into the overall volumetric composition, preserving the coherence of the street facade and avoiding any fragmentation of the main volume. The compact programme, organised around a clear internal layout, frees up quality outdoor spaces sheltered from views from both roads.

This project demonstrates the firm's ability to requalify a visible and complex site by delivering residential architecture that responds sensitively to its rural setting while embracing a confident contemporary expression.
