— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Wépion, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), STARC has designed a renovation and extension project for a rural single-family home set back within a wooded plot. The existing building, featuring white rendered masonry walls and a natural slate pitched roof, serves as the formal and material foundation for the entire architectural intervention.

The design strategy establishes a considered dialogue between the original structure and the new spaces added to meet an evolving family programme. The main facade retains its traditional fenestration rhythm, punctuated by dark-louvred shutters and blue stone surrounds, while the adjoining extension opens generously onto the garden through a large glazed bay. This interplay between the solidity of the existing building and the transparency of the new volume creates a carefully controlled spatial gradation between the living areas and the surrounding landscape.

A unified slate roof covering the entire composition ensures formal coherence across the whole and firmly anchors the project within its rural setting. Roof dormers bring natural light into the habitable loft spaces, allowing a dense programme, encompassing an enlarged kitchen, additional children's bedrooms and a new shower room, to be distributed across two levels within a compact, site-integrated volume.
