— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Thorembais-Saint-Trond, in the province of Walloon Brabant, this project involves the extension and interior transformation of an existing single-family house in grey brick, combining the creation of an indoor swimming space with the conversion of a bedroom into a consultation office. The design carefully separates private and professional uses within the same building, responding to a dual domestic and medical programme. The new volume housing the indoor pool, approximately eleven by four and a half metres, is grafted onto the existing structure through a controlled integration strategy. The brick materiality, facade rhythm and overall tone of the original building serve as formal references for the new addition, achieving coherence without rupture or excessive mimicry. The relationship between the pool space and the existing garden extends the transparency already established by the large horizontal glazing on the ground floor, channelling natural light to enliven the aquatic interior while preserving the privacy of the whole. The interior reconfiguration reflects a rationalisation of the existing layout: the current circulation allows for a discreet and autonomous access to the consultation room, without disrupting the spatial organisation of the home. Designed by STARC, the intervention is distinguished by its compactness and architectural restraint, ensuring a coherent outcome that respects both the existing building and its setting in Wallonia.
