— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

This single-family home extension in Waterloo, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, exemplifies a careful approach to residential architecture in which a new volume is added without disrupting the coherence of the existing composition. Designed by STARC architecture firm, the ground-floor extension of approximately thirty square metres is attached to the rear facade of a house typical of the suburban residential fabric of the area, featuring brown-grey brick masonry, a steeply pitched roof clad in synthetic slates, and roof windows providing zenithal light to the loft space.

The design builds upon the relationship between interior and garden that was already established through a generous sliding door and a paved terrace extending the living space outward. The new volume leans against the existing rear facade in a way that preserves the overall massing as seen from the street. Its materiality echoes that of the original house to ensure visual consistency, while the fenestration maximises natural light and sustains a clear visual and physical connection to the terrace and garden.

The articulation between old and new is handled with restraint, allowing the extension to read as a natural part of the initial composition while meeting the contemporary needs of the brief. The project reflects a sensitive and contextual approach to residential extension in a pavillonary setting.
