— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Autre-Eglise, in the province of Walloon Brabant, STARC architecture firm has designed a new detached single-family house set at the edge of a rural village fabric, on a slightly elevated plot that opens onto a sweeping view of the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The building's positioning allows a generous setback from the road, ensuring a clear reading of the volume from the public space while directing the living areas toward the open countryside. The compact massing engages with the scale of neighbouring constructions without replicating them, minimising the footprint and achieving a considered integration within this threshold landscape between tree lines and open fields.

The material palette draws on the muted brick tones characteristic of rural Brabant architecture, maintaining continuity with the existing built environment without resorting to imitation. Fenestration is distributed according to orientation and available views: facades facing the agricultural landscape receive more generous openings that draw natural light deep into the interior and reinforce the visual connection with the outdoors, while the side elevations, closer to the plot boundaries, adopt a quieter rhythm.

The result is a balanced piece of residential architecture in Belgium, sensitive to the rural character of Autre-Eglise and its immediate surroundings.
