— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Hévillers, in the province of Walloon Brabant, STARC architecture firm has designed a new mixed-use building of approximately 190 m², combining a sports medicine practice on the ground floor with a two-bedroom dwelling on the upper level.

The building is positioned to make the most of its edge condition, set between an open agricultural plot and an existing fabric of individual volumes embedded in vegetation. A generous setback from the road preserves the relationship with the rural landscape, while the hedgerows and tall trees that define the backdrop remain a constant visual presence. The compact two-storey massing responds to the scale of the surrounding built environment, avoiding any rupture with the neighbouring structures.

The facade composition clearly reflects the dual programme without overstating the difference between the two functions. Fenestration is carefully calibrated to meet the specific requirements of each entity: controlled, north-facing openings for the consultation rooms, and a more generous glazing strategy oriented towards the garden for the dwelling, maximising natural light and the connection to the outdoors. The material palette is deliberately restrained, in keeping with the understated character of the site.

The resulting architecture is resolutely contemporary yet measured, rooted in its rural context in Wallonia without resorting to pastiche, and focused throughout on the quality of use of both programmes it brings together under one roof.
