— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
A single-storey contemporary extension in Nalinnes, in the province of Hainaut, Wallonia, this project by architecture firm STARC adds approximately 60 m² to an existing house characterised by a two-storey volume topped with a long-pitched roof with a curved slope.
Rather than mimicking or formally extending the existing building, the architectural approach embraces a clear articulation between the two entities. The extension asserts itself as a low, compact and horizontal base, deliberately set apart through its dark anthracite cladding, which contrasts sharply with the white render of the original house. This intentional two-tone composition makes the overall composition immediately legible from the garden and gives the ensemble a coherent volumetric identity.
Generously sized sliding glazed doors create a strong visual and spatial connection between the interior living area and the adjacent covered terrace, seamlessly extending domestic life towards the outdoors. A timber lining on the underside of the roof overhang and at the rear of the loggia introduces material warmth at the threshold between inside and garden, softening the rigour of the darker tones. The extension's orientation towards the private garden maximises natural light to the rear facade, while the covered transition zone provides a sheltered outdoor living area throughout the seasons.
Landscaping around the extension accompanies the architectural composition without competing with it, grounding this residential architecture project in its neighbourhood context with care and restraint.
