— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

The complete renovation of a mid-terrace brick house in Haren, on the periphery of Brussels, reflects a commitment to thoroughly requalifying an existing dwelling while preserving its relationship with the surrounding residential fabric. Set back from the street, the building presents a restrained two-storey volume beneath a pitched roof, its characteristic ochre brick tying naturally into the local architectural context.

The key move of the project is the relocation of the staircase core, which enables a full redistribution of the living levels, a rationalisation of circulation flows, and the coherent conversion of the loft space. This intervention opens up continuous, better-oriented spaces that make the most of the natural light available at the rear facade, overlooking the garden. The fenestration is redesigned to establish a more generous relationship between the interior and the landscaped surroundings, grounding the house within its plot.

The renovation of the ground floor completes this deep spatial recomposition by pursuing consistency of materiality and detailing across all levels. Designed by the architecture firm STARC, the project embraces a deliberate restraint, respectful of the existing volume, while bringing a renewed spatial clarity and quality to every part of the home. The project is a strong example of thoughtful residential renovation architecture in the Brussels-Capital Region.
