— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

This energy renovation of a terraced house in Auderghem, Brussels, demonstrates how architectural restraint and spatial optimisation can be combined within the dense residential fabric typical of the Belgian capital's inner suburbs. The existing three-storey volume, featuring a ground-floor garage, belongs to a coherent streetscape that the project was designed to fully respect. The overall massing was preserved intact, with no formal transformation of the exterior envelope.

The conversion of the attic level represents the defining move of the project. The aim was to unlock the spatial potential of a previously underused floor, working carefully on the relationship between the existing roof structure and the new functions it now accommodates. The fenestration pattern on the front facade reflects a deliberate intention to bring in natural light while sustaining a measured dialogue with the window rhythm of the surrounding terraced context.

The materiality is defined by a uniform light render that unifies the entire facade, reinforcing the coherence of the intervention and its integration within the urban setting. STARC, an architecture firm based in Wallonia, led this project with an approach that favoured compactness and architectural continuity over rupture, treating energy renewal as a quiet but structuring driver of the home's overall transformation. Completed in 2024, the project illustrates how an ambitious renovation can engage sensitively with a historically layered built environment.
