— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
Renovation and interior redesign of a bourgeois townhouse in Tervuren, in the province of Walloon Brabant, with a focus on enhancing the existing architectural heritage and improving the quality of living spaces. The project respects the character of this type of historic residence, preserving the defining elements of its identity while meeting contemporary standards of comfort and spatial use.
The intervention, carried out by architecture firm STARC, involved a complete rethinking of the interior layout to optimise circulation, natural light and the hierarchy of spaces. The existing volume is retained in its entirety, with the work concentrating on materiality, finishes and the relationships between rooms, guided by a consistent pursuit of coherence and restraint in formal choices.
The architectural approach favours listening to the building rather than imposing an overtly contemporary language. Every design decision aims to reveal the potential of the house, reinforce its character and offer the occupants a living environment that is elegant, functional and rooted in the history of the place. This project demonstrates the capacity of architecture to transform an existing space without betraying its spirit.
