— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Grand-Leez, in the Gembloux area of Namur province, STARC designed the extension of an existing veterinary practice and the regularisation of a converted attic space serving as a caretaker's flat, drawing on the typological references of traditional Walloon agricultural buildings. The project reflects a disciplined approach to integration within the rural built environment, deliberately avoiding any conspicuous formal gesture.

The unified two-storey volume, topped by a slate-clad gable roof, sits naturally within the village's prevailing scale. Materiality is a key structuring element: two brick assemblies are combined, one in warm ochre-red tones for the main volume, the other in dark blue stone for the plinth of the extension, creating a subtle articulation between the existing building and the newly added volume. This duality of materials gives rhythm to the facades while maintaining overall coherence.

The fenestration is handled with restraint. Large glazed openings with dark aluminium frames signal the practice entrance at street level, two roof lights provide zenithal natural light to the attic space, and an oculus punctuates the gable facade with welcome lightness. The building is set back slightly from the road, forming a gravel forecourt that eases visitor access and reinforces the legibility of the building's function from the public realm.

This extension and renovation project in Wallonia demonstrates a grounded, context-sensitive approach to residential and professional architecture in rural Belgium.
