In Braives, in the province of Liège, Wallonia, STARC architecture firm carried out the complete renovation of an old village building, combining respect for the existing structure with contemporary standards of residential comfort. The project is part of a broader approach to enhancing rural built heritage in Wallonia, while preserving the original volumetric identity and authentic character of the construction.
The intervention covered the entire building, from the restructuring of interior spaces to the restoration of the external envelope. Particular attention was paid to the coherence of materiality, ensuring a balanced dialogue between the retained historic elements and the contemporary additions required to bring the building up to current standards and improve its overall performance.
The implantation within the village fabric of Braives guided the urbanistic integration choices, ensuring that the renovated building sits harmoniously within its built surroundings. Natural light and the quality of interior atmospheres were central priorities throughout the design process.
