Renovation and extension of a house in Bossière

— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

Renovation of a single-family house in Bossière, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), including the construction of a two-storey extension of approximately 30 m², for which the structural shell was designed and supervised by the architecture firm while finishes and technical installations were carried out through self-build by the owners. The project reflects a hybrid delivery model increasingly sought after in Belgium: professional oversight of the structural and regulatory framework, combined with active owner involvement in the later phases of construction. STARC was responsible for ensuring the structural integrity and architectural coherence of the new extension, which integrates seamlessly into the existing volumetry of the house without disrupting the scale of the surrounding village fabric. This participatory approach offers a compelling response to contemporary challenges of affordability and sustainability in residential architecture, enabling homeowners to reduce costs while maintaining control over the quality and character of their living environment. The project stands as an example of thoughtful, sober architecture rooted in the constructive realities of a specific place and a specific way of building.
