In Rixensart, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, STARC carried out the comprehensive transformation of an existing residential property to make it fully accessible for people with reduced mobility, including the installation of a private lift. Completed in 2024, the project addresses a fundamental challenge: enabling the occupants to continue living in their home with full comfort and independence, while preserving the architectural coherence of the building.
The design process focused on rethinking both the vertical and horizontal circulation within the dwelling. The lift was integrated in a way that maintains the legibility of the interior volumes and ensures a smooth flow between spaces. Every threshold and transition between rooms was carefully studied to guarantee ease of use in line with current accessibility standards.
Beyond its technical dimension, this residential transformation demonstrates how architecture can respond sensitively to the evolving needs of its inhabitants, intervening with precision on the existing fabric without altering its identity. The project reflects a measured and attentive approach, in which the sobriety of the intervention is matched by the effectiveness of the solutions implemented.
