In Court-Saint-Etienne, in Walloon Brabant, this project combines the conversion of existing roof space into a habitable studio with the construction of a veranda-type extension, forming a coherent intervention on a residential property. The architecture firm STARC approached both programmes as complementary, aiming to enhance the spatial potential of the existing building while preserving its overall character.
The loft conversion required careful consideration of interior volumes, natural light under the roof structure, and the functional organisation of a compact living space. Every design decision was guided by the need to achieve genuine comfort and liveability within the constraints of the existing framework.
The veranda extension establishes a fluid transition between the interior living areas and the garden, working with transparency and visual continuity to blur the boundary between inside and outside. Its considered implantation ensures a harmonious relationship with the main building and the surrounding residential context.
Together, these two interventions demonstrate how targeted architectural work on existing residential buildings can unlock significant spatial value through precise, measured additions that respect the built heritage of Walloon Brabant.
