This residential extension project in Thorembais-Saint-Trond, in the province of Walloon Brabant, adds a bedroom, a versatile office and leisure space, and integrated storage areas to an existing single-family home. Completed in 2023, the intervention focuses on thoughtful expansion that maintains architectural continuity with the original building.
The extension was designed by STARC, an architecture firm based in Wallonia, with close attention to the scale and footprint of the existing structure. The choice of materials echoes those of the original construction, ensuring a harmonious integration within the village's residential fabric. Interior spaces are organized to clearly distinguish between different uses: rest, work or leisure, and storage.
Although compact in scope, the programme addresses a genuine evolution in the occupants' needs. The restrained architectural approach delivers a proportionate response to the rural character of Thorembais-Saint-Trond, avoiding any visual disruption to the surrounding context. This project demonstrates how a considered extension strategy, even on a limited programme, can meaningfully and lastingly improve everyday living conditions.
