— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Chaumont-Gistoux, in the province of Walloon Brabant, STARC completed in 2023 the transformation and extension of a single-storey family home, pursuing two clear goals: expanding the living space and achieving a dramatic improvement in energy performance.
The extension, approximately 30 m², is positioned at the rear of the existing building and accommodates a sleeping wing with additional bedrooms and home offices. Its massing and roofline deliberately mirror those of the original structure, making the intervention invisible from the street and from neighbouring plots. This volumetric restraint ensures a carefully considered integration into a predominantly wooded setting.
All facades are treated in a unified manner with grey composite panel cladding, installed following the removal of the existing face brick. Already present on nearby buildings, this material provides strong architectural coherence, proven long-term durability and a discreet presence within the natural landscape. External wall insulation, combined with thermal upgrading of the floor and roof, brings the building from an energy performance rating of G all the way to A+, a remarkable leap in energy efficiency.
The landscaping strategy prioritises soil permeability throughout: the surroundings are entirely redesigned using water-permeable materials, and a rainwater harvesting tank with a buffer system is integrated into the project, reducing surface sealing and supporting sustainable stormwater management.
