In Perwez, in the province of Walloon Brabant, this renovation project focuses on the complete reorganisation of the first floor and attic of a village house, aiming to unlock the spatial potential of an existing structure while preserving its vernacular character. The project balances a restrained approach with careful attention to detail, rethinking the interior layout to deliver contemporary, light-filled and functional living spaces within a retained building envelope.
The redesigned first floor improves circulation and spatial hierarchy, while the attic conversion exploits the geometry of the roof structure to create intimate rooms under the slope, generously lit through thoughtfully positioned openings. The interior materiality maintains coherence and durability, entering into dialogue with the constructive qualities of the original building.
Designed by the Belgian architecture firm STARC, this residential renovation project reflects a rigorous approach to the transformation of ordinary built heritage, where programmatic precision and material economy come together to produce a sensitive, well-inhabited result that remains rooted in its village context.
