— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Ramillies, in the Walloon Brabant province of Wallonia, STARC architecture firm led the complete reconstruction of the main dwelling of a dilapidated farmstead, while converting the secondary outbuildings into professional spaces, including a beauty and care salon. The new building is positioned on the exact footprint of the demolished house, faithfully reproducing its original scale across ground floor, upper floor and attic, ensuring seamless integration within the rural built environment.

The massing combines a pitched two-slope roof on the main volume, finished with anthracite flat tiles, alongside a flat roof covering the ancillary structures. The material palette balances classical and contemporary references: light render, dark-framed windows and timber cladding on the secondary facade create a restrained and coherent composition that echoes the character of the original materials while meeting present-day architectural standards.

The prior demolition, made necessary by the advanced deterioration of the existing structure, provided the opportunity to deliver a new build fully compliant with current energy performance regulations, combining technical efficiency with functional and aesthetic quality. The project stands as a thoughtful response to the reconversion of a Walloon farmstead, preserving the scale and spirit of the original building within both its built and natural context.
