— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Bousval, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, STARC architecture firm led the transformation of an existing single-storey extension of approximately 40 m², aiming to improve its liveability, spatial quality, and energy performance. The brief centred on merging a small conservatory and an adjacent room into a single, generous open-plan kitchen and dining area suited to a large family's everyday life.
Sited mainly at the rear of the house along a quiet back lane, the project has minimal impact on the surrounding streetscape and neighbouring properties. A ground-level bicycle storage unit, directly accessible from the street, completes the programme and supports sustainable mobility.
Architecturally, the secondary volumes were unified through a natural-tone timber cladding applied consistently across all facades, a choice that resonates with the wooded character of this part of Bousval. The rooflines were reworked as flat platforms to homogenise the overall architectural language and lend the ensemble a restrained, contemporary reading.
Compact in volume and built with durable, context-sensitive materials, this residential extension project demonstrates how precise and measured architectural responses can meaningfully transform domestic spaces in Wallonia, without altering the character of their built and natural surroundings.
