— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Mont-Saint-Guibert, in the Walloon Brabant province, STARC designed a bioclimatic, low-energy timber-frame house built through a self-build process led by the clients themselves.
The architectural approach draws on core bioclimatic principles: a carefully considered siting on the plot, an orientation designed to maximise passive solar gains, and a compact massing that minimises thermal losses. The timber frame structure, a renewable material with a low carbon footprint, provides the load-bearing skeleton of the house and gives the project a material identity consistent with its environmental ambitions.
The self-build process, guided throughout by the architecture firm, called for a rigorous and instructive design, tailored to construction by the future occupants. Every structural and constructive decision was weighed against both technical feasibility and energy performance, while preserving spatial quality and overall architectural coherence.
This residential project reflects STARC's commitment to restrained, sustainable architecture rooted in the landscape and character of Walloon Brabant.
