— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Nil-Saint-Vincent-Saint-Martin, in Namur province (Wallonia), STARC designed a single-storey extension of approximately 25 m² attached to the rear corner of an existing two-storey house, combining an enriched garden-level living programme with a carefully considered visual screen towards the rear of the plot. The low, compact volume integrates with the main building without competing with it, creating a gentle transition between the interior and the landscaped garden.
Material continuity serves as the guiding principle of the composition. Exposed brick in irregular bond, with rose and violet hues, is shared by both volumes and ensures their formal coherence. The flat roof of the extension contrasts quietly with the dark slate pitched roof of the existing house, marking the distinction between old and new without disruption.
The glazing strategy articulates two complementary registers: a wide window with anthracite glazing bars, oriented towards the garden, floods the space with natural light and establishes a controlled visual connection with the exterior, while a screen of vertical timber slats filters lateral views and modulates sunlight on the façade. Carefully detailed natural bluestone window surrounds, repeated identically on the openings of the existing house, anchor the whole composition in a logic of landscape integration and a measured dialogue between the original building and its contemporary extension.
