— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Piétrain, in the province of Walloon Brabant, STARC designed a new-build family villa in 2022, combining a main residence, a private office and a poolhouse around a founding compositional gesture: the deliberate tension between two distinct volumes. A taller body, covered by a dark pitched slate roof, establishes the domestic scale of the main villa and grounds the project within its built context. A lower, flat-roofed volume detaches itself from this mass and extends horizontally towards the garden, housing the office and poolhouse functions in an atmosphere that opens generously onto the landscape.

The materiality is defined by restraint: white render unifies the facades of both volumes and reinforces their refined geometry, while the slate cladding of the main body introduces a dark counterpoint that gives the overall silhouette its quiet authority. On the garden elevation, broad continuous glazing dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, drawing natural light deep into the living spaces from multiple orientations.

The siting takes full advantage of the plot's depth, setting the villa back from the street and embedding it within a green setting. The projecting low volume, extended by a roof overhang acting as a canopy, creates a sheltered threshold between covered space and lawn, giving this Wallonia residential architecture project the quality of a home that engages openly with its site while preserving the privacy of its interior spaces.
