— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Gembloux, Namur province, Wallonia, STARC designed the extension of a single-family house of approximately 70 m² spread across two storeys, seamlessly continuing the existing suburban fabric without disrupting the neighbouring built context. The frontage implantation, aligned with the adjacent building height, roots the project in its local urban logic while establishing a clear and confident presence from the street.
The compact massing beneath a dual-pitched roof responds to the architectural typologies characteristic of the Gembloux area, achieving contextual integration without superficial imitation. The facade materiality relies on a light sand-toned brick cladding whose texture lends warmth and restraint to the overall composition. Anthracite roof tiles, extended by gutters and verges in dark metal, establish a deliberate chromatic dialogue with the masonry. The joinery, uniformly treated in a deep tone, rhythms the facade in a measured way: an axial entrance door, vertical windows on the upper level and an integrated garage door that preserves the continuity of scale. Roof lights introduce zenithal natural light into the interior of the upper floor.
The transitional space between the street and the entrance threshold is handled with restraint, combining mineral paving and low planting to achieve a controlled visual permeability while protecting the privacy of the ground floor. The project demonstrates the firm's ability to densify an existing residential fabric with precision and coherence.
