— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
This renovation of a single-family house in Wavre, in Walloon Brabant, combines the construction of a rear extension with the addition of two dormer windows to sustainably improve both the liveability and energy performance of the building. The project, designed by Belgian architecture firm STARC, addresses a dual ambition: increasing usable floor area and volumes while opening the home to natural light through carefully positioned openings.
The rear annex, housing the dining room and kitchen, is conceived in continuity with the surrounding built fabric. Its massing echoes the typologies found in the immediate neighbourhood, ensuring coherent urban integration while maintaining a distinct architectural character. The two dormers follow the same rationale, reshaping the roof profile in keeping with the existing scale and forms.
The materiality of these extensions is defined by a cladding of anthracite-toned slate tiles. This choice lends the intervention a singular architectural identity while remaining well integrated into its context. Slate also offers recognised durability, consistent with the project's broader goal of significantly enhancing the overall energy performance of the renovated home.
