— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
This renovation of a detached four-facade house in Villers-la-Ville, in Walloon Brabant, brings the building up to date both aesthetically and in terms of energy performance, giving it a resolutely contemporary architectural character. The architecture firm STARC approached the project by retaining the existing footprint while raising the secondary volume at the rear of the house, significantly increasing the living area without altering the original site layout.
The rear facade of this annexed volume is opened up to frame views onto the garden and to draw in maximum natural light. Careful attention is given to materiality throughout: the facades are painted white, the existing timber frames are replaced by dark aluminium windows, and the roof covering is renewed with anthracite tiles. This restrained, contrasting palette gives the house a coherent chromatic identity and a clearly readable massing.
The result integrates naturally into the residential fabric of Villers-la-Ville, where neighbouring houses share a similar contemporary aesthetic. The project thus fits confidently within its built context while bringing a measured sense of modernity, an approach that reflects the values consistently pursued by this architecture firm active across Wallonia and Brussels.
