— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Wépion, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), STARC designed a single-storey extension of approximately 10 m² attached to the right gable of an existing detached house, with the aim of creating a garden-facing home office in seamless architectural continuity with the original building.
The design approach centres on the rigorous integration of the new volume into the existing ensemble. The extension aligns with the rear facade of the house and features a flat roof that introduces a subtle interplay of volumes against the pitched roof of the main building. This careful interlocking allows the new space to blend into the built context while maintaining its own clear volumetric identity.
The south-west orientation guided the placement of the vertical glazed openings, generously facing both the rear and front gardens to maximise natural light and the relationship with the outdoor landscape. Material continuity ensures overall coherence: red brick matching the existing masonry, blue stone sills and coping, off-white window frames, and an EPDM membrane for the flat roof.
This project demonstrates how a measured architectural intervention can meaningfully enhance everyday life, adding a calm and light-filled workspace without disrupting the harmonious character of a family home in Wépion.
