— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
This residential renovation and extension project in Braine-le-Château, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, is defined by the dialogue between two distinct yet complementary volumes: an existing pitched-roof house finished in white render and dark slate, extended by a strictly horizontal contemporary flat-roof addition. Rather than concealing the reading of the original building, the intervention prolongs its presence through a clearly identifiable architectural gesture, unified by a disciplined black-and-white material palette.
The garden-facing facade forms the spatial core of the project. A wide sliding door with black-framed glazing establishes a direct continuity between the single-storey living spaces and the paved terrace, drawing natural light deep into the interior. This controlled openness creates a direct relationship with the pool and the leisure areas arranged at a lower level. A cantilevered canopy, supported by a single slender column, defines a covered transition zone between inside and outside.
The overall restraint of the design ensures a coherent dialogue between the two parts of the building. The measured rhythm of the openings, the compactness of the volumes and the precision of the horizontal lines allow the project to integrate harmoniously into its wooded surroundings. Completed in 2021, this project by STARC, an architecture firm based in Gembloux, Wallonia, demonstrates the practice's approach to combining renovation and contemporary extension with clarity and rigour.
