— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
A detached single-family house in Ernage, Walloon Brabant, designed around a compact and unified volume whose pitched roof draws on the rural building tradition of the Brabant countryside. The four-facade implantation, free from any party wall, allows the volume to be read in its entirety from the garden and ensures a carefully considered orientation of openings relative to solar gain.
The materiality is built on a measured dialogue between red-orange brick, deeply rooted in the local landscape, and anthracite grey cladding panels that dress the gable ends and emphasise the ridge line. This chromatic articulation structures the perception of the building without disrupting its overall legibility. The fenestration directly reflects the interior layout: a large double-height bay window on the garden side signals the living room, open all the way up to the roof structure, the central space around which the levels are organised. This vertical generosity draws natural light deep into the plan and creates a strong visual connection between the living area and the private garden.
A ground-level terrace, subtly raised from the ground by a restrained transition, naturally extends the living space outdoors and reinforces the intended porosity between interior and landscape. Designed by architecture firm STARC, the project delivers a domestic architecture free of superfluous gestures, whose formal sobriety is its primary quality of integration into its Wallonian setting.
