Single-storey extension of a house in Jodoigne

This single-storey extension to a family home in Jodoigne, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, demonstrates how a restrained and contemporary volume can meaningfully expand the living spaces of an existing dwelling. The architecture firm STARC designed a compact rectangular addition of approximately 20 m², set at the rear of the house and aligned with part of the existing back facade, fully within the permitted building zone.

The extension adopts a clean parallelepiped form with a flat roof, lending a modern character to the ensemble while maintaining a respectful relationship with the existing built fabric. The new living room accommodates generously sized glazed openings, carefully positioned to draw in as much natural light as possible despite the north-east and north-west orientation of the rear elevations. The project illustrates how thoughtful architectural design and strategic placement of openings can optimise daylighting even under constrained orientation conditions.

The materiality of the extension echoes the existing building through a pink-brown brick cladding, ensuring a coherent and harmonious integration of the new volume into its residential context. This material choice grounds the intervention in the local architectural character while preserving the compositional unity of the home.

Completed in 2021 as a turnkey project, this residential extension in Jodoigne improves the liveability, comfort and energy performance of the house, delivering a bright and well-proportioned living space for its occupants.
