— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Nil-Saint-Vincent, in the province of Namur, Wallonia, STARC architecture firm designed a single-storey contemporary extension attached to the right gable of an existing house, opening broadly onto the rear garden and incorporating a carport at the front.

The architectural approach centres on a clean, flat-roofed volume whose generous overhanging canopy strongly asserts the project's horizontality and slenderness. Full-height vertical glazing establishes a rhythmic interplay of solid and void across the facades, while the open carport structure lends visual lightness to the street elevation. The building's placement takes full advantage of its south-south-east orientation, flooding the double living room with natural light and creating a seamless transition toward the garden and swimming pool.

The material palette plays on contrast: bright white render covers the exterior walls, while deep dark grey composite panels clad the canopy soffit, matched by aluminium window frames in the same tone. The rear terrace and carport parking area are finished in blue stone tiles, a white gravel path runs alongside the extension, and the flat roof is waterproofed with an EPDM membrane. The careful interlocking of the new contemporary volume with the existing building produces a subtle volumetric dialogue that gives the whole project a coherent and confident architectural identity.
