— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Pry, a village in the municipality of Walcourt in Namur province, STARC designed a detached single-family house that balances traditional character with a carefully considered contemporary composition in a quiet, landscaped setting.
The building is positioned to take advantage of the site's natural topography, with the terrain sitting slightly above road level. The main facade faces east, set back from the road to allow parking in front of the house, while the rear facade opens to the west through large glazed openings that flood the open-plan living and kitchen area with natural light throughout the day. Service spaces and the garage are grouped to the north, preserving the most favourable orientations for the main living areas.
The massing combines a traditional pitched roof volume, clad in dark grey flat interlocking roof tiles, with an interlocking flat-roofed volume that introduces a contemporary reading without disrupting the local architectural vernacular. Vertical openings punctuate the facades, establishing a measured rhythm of solid and void. The materiality clearly distinguishes the two volumes: light grey brick for the main body, dark grey brick for the flat-roofed section, complemented by composite cladding panels in the same dark grey tone as the window frames, creating a unified appearance between glazing and facade. The driveway and terrace are finished in concrete block paving.
