— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

This residential extension project in Walhain, in the province of Walloon Brabant, was designed by STARC architecture firm as a two-storey addition to the front facade of an existing house, providing a playroom on the ground floor and an additional bedroom upstairs, covering approximately 45 m².

The architectural approach is built around careful integration with the existing building. The new volume, narrower and lower than the original house, adopts the same proportions and roof pitches. The junction between the two elements is handled with precision, the extension meeting the existing structure without formal disruption. The selected materials naturally extend the established palette of the house: brown brick, grey window frames and dark roof tiles ensure a coherent visual continuity.

Cedar cladding applied to certain facades of the extension introduces warmth and intimacy to the whole. This material choice adds a quietly distinctive quality to the intervention without undermining the overall harmony. The carefully balanced materiality gives the extension a character that feels both rooted in its context and gently contemporary.

The project sits in balanced dialogue with the built and natural surroundings of Walhain, reflecting an approach that is respectful of the existing urban fabric and local landscape in Wallonia.
