In Gembloux, in the province of Namur, Wallonia, architecture firm STARC carried out a full interior renovation of a detached four-façade house built in 1978, combined with the construction of a single-storey extension designed as a semi-autonomous space.
The works on the existing building completely reorganise the ground floor layout: the former small living room becomes a functional entrance hall with cloakroom, the former ground-floor bedroom is converted into a study, and the kitchen, dining room and living room are merged into a single, open-plan living space better suited to family life. On the upper floor, a shower room and a toilet are added, and the bedrooms are redesigned.
The extension, positioned at the rear of the house, features a simple and compact volume that projects slightly to the right of the main structure by one metre forty, making the independent entrance clearly visible from the street. This entrance leads directly to a dedicated room for creative activities with children. A flat EPDM roof ensures a seamless junction with the existing cornice without disrupting the overall visual coherence of the building. Generous glazing brings abundant natural light into the new space.
The choice of materials lends a contemporary character to the whole: vertically slatted light-toned timber cladding on the façade, with anthracite aluminium roof edging and window frames throughout. The project successfully balances improved living comfort, volumetric coherence and careful integration into the existing built fabric of Gembloux.
