— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
This renovation of a 1970s single-family house in Gembloux, in the province of Namur, Wallonia, focuses on the requalification of interior spaces and the careful treatment of the surroundings, while fully preserving the low, elongated volume under a pitched roof that is characteristic of the Condroz plateau. The architecture firm STARC, based in Gembloux, led the project with a clear commitment to respecting the inherited built silhouette while bringing it a sober and contemporary expression.
The central intention is to establish a seamless continuity between the living spaces and the garden, taking advantage of the favourable orientation of the rear facade towards an open agricultural landscape. The fenestration was redesigned as a succession of wide sliding bays that punctuate the facade with a regular rhythm, creating a generous permeability towards the terrace and surrounding lawns. Natural light penetrates deep into the living areas, reinforcing the visual connection with the open horizon of the Condroz.
The chosen materiality grounds the project in its rural context while giving it a quiet contemporary character. The ochre-red textured brick with sandy beige joints enters into dialogue with the tones of the surrounding landscape. A dark timber band frames the cornice and the roof overhang, adding warmth and precision to the transition between masonry and roofing. This combination of natural materials ensures a discreet yet confident integration into the landscape.
