— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Gembloux, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), architecture firm STARC designed a single-storey rear extension to a residential house, replacing a dilapidated veranda with a contemporary volume housing a new kitchen.

The extension follows the alignment of the existing building's right gable wall, maintaining roughly the same footprint as the structure it replaces. The volume is deliberately simple and compact, topped by a flat roof that introduces a contemporary character, set in considered contrast with the white brick of the original house. The timber cladding of the new extension bridges both architectural registers with coherence, lending warmth and identity to the rear elevation as a whole.

With no direct overlooking from neighbouring properties, the new kitchen benefits from generous openings oriented towards the garden, ensuring abundant natural light throughout the day. The enlarged space gains in surface area, comfort and conviviality, creating a welcoming family environment that opens onto the outdoor setting.

Beyond its functional programme, this architectural intervention also improves the thermal performance of the home by replacing a degraded envelope with a well-insulated new construction that balances volumetric restraint with architectural quality.
